IsiNdebele

IsiNdebele is one of the official languages of Zimbabwe. It is also called:

  • Northern Ndebele,
  • Ndebele,
  • Zimbabwean Ndebele, and
  • (formerly known) as Matabele.
Matabele is derived from the Sesotho expression thebetelele derived from two words “thebe” meaning shield and “telele” meaning tall. IsiNdebele belongs to the Nguni group of Bantu languages and AmaNdebele is the term used to refer to Ndebele people. Another term for the Ndebele Kingdom is "Mthwakazi" and the people are referred to as "uMthwakazi" or "oMthwakazi"
